WHY 2JZ IS SO GOOD?
The 2JZ engine is a legendary powerplant in the tuner community and is what made the last year of the Supra so popular.
The over engineered, closed engine design allows for the use of mass amounts of boost on stock internals.
This, combined with the reliability that is ever present in any inline-six design, is mostly to blame for how much abuse the 2JZ is able to withstand, but the best way to understand exactly how Toyota designed the 2JZ to be so bulletproof is to dig into one.
.
TOYOTA SUPRA
What makes a sports car legendary? 9/10 times it is the engine and in this case, that holds true.
The 4th generation of Toyota Supra came with two different engine choices but the best and most well-known option is the 2JZ-GTE. The difference between the two engines, 2JZ-GTE and 2JZ-GE, is the letter “T” and while it does not seem like much, that “T” signifies the addition of two turbochargers to the 2JZ engine. Just while we are on the value of different letters, the “G” signifies that it is the performance variant and the “E” signifies that it features electronic fuel injection.
DRIFT KING
Many people think that the legend named “Drift King” aka “DK” aka Keiichi Tsuchiya (土屋圭市, Tsuchiya Keiichi) is only a legend. But no!
It is a Japanese racing driver born on January 30, 1956 in Tōmi, Nagano Prefecture. He is primarily known as the “Drift King” for his mastery of controlled skids (drifting) in auto racing events and his numerous video reports on learning to drift : “Pluspy”
He started his driving career in 1977 as an amateur in the Fuji Freshman series, and quickly rose through the ranks as he competed in all types of competitions, from national championships, Le Mans, NASCAR, and especially the JGTC (Japanese GT Championship), to the “D1 Grand Prix“, where he currently serves as a judge and referee.
He is the most famous drift driver in Japan, as he is considered the founding father of drifting. That is why this man is one of the most respected persons within the JDM culture… he did a lot for it.
HISTORY OF DRIFT
WHEN WAS THE 2JZ MADE?
The 2JZ motor was introduced in the year 1991 and produced until 2002 in Japan.
By professional motorsport standards, drifting is a relatively new category; but like stock car and drag racing, the sideways driving art form first came about as an illegal activity performed on public roads.
NASCAR’s roots can be traced back to the antics of moonshine runners during the United States’ Prohibition period throughout the 1920s and early ‘30s, while the hot rod movement post WW2 saw many of America’s two-lane blacktop backroads play host to impromptu quarter-mile showdowns.
